In the United States, approximately 600,000 people have a pulmonary embolism each year, and about 30% of them die. Pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a blood clot detaches from a larger thrombus located somewhere else in the body (frequently from DVT, or Deep Vein Thrombosis), becoming an embolus, and travels into the heart via the inferior or superior vena cava. This embolus then travels through the heart and into the pulmonary trunk, arteries, or branches where it becomes lodged. This foreign body blocks the deoxygenated blood returning from the body from reaching the main oxygen supply in the lungs. Consequently, the blood cannot be re-oxygenated, and therefore, depletes the body from the proper amount of oxygen needed to fulfill normal functions. The proposed YawaMed approach is to treat DVT by removing the clot that is attached to the vessel wall as well as the main thrombus core structure. Studies demonstrated that mechanical removal of the clot improves venous valve function preservation. Achieving this goal minimizes deaths and complications in pulmonary embolism and diminishes the sequelae of post-thrombotic syndrome. This talk will review the clinical background of DVT and discuss YawaMed's novel approach to treating this disease state.
