Topic Description
Online medical virtual environments are the "flight simulators" for healthcare professionals. Based on videogame technology but augmented to simulate medical spaces and objects, these environments support individual and team learning in simulated but realistic clinical conditions. We will present CliniSpace, an award-winning online virtual environment in which learners encounter virtual patients, work as teams, and save lives, in a safe environment, where they can learn even from their mistakes.

Speaker Bio
Parvati Dev is CEO of Innovation in Learning Inc., a California start-up developing a new 3D immersive environment, CliniSpace, for online learning in healthcare. She believes that virtual hospitals and homes, with virtual patients and families, will become standard in medical education as well as in patient education and medical marketing. This, together with high-resolution video, for immersive face-to-face interaction, will create a future learning and collaboration environment that will erase geographic barriers and bring local knowledge to serve global needs.
Parvati completed her doctoral degree at Stanford University in Electrical Engineering. She has worked on the research and teaching staff at M.I.T., Boston University, and Stanford, as well as leading product development for three-dimensional imaging at CEMAX, a medical imaging company. From 1990 to 2007, she directed and led the SUMMIT Research Laboratory for Learning Technologies at Stanford University, where her research on simulation and game-based learning resulted in multiple awards for innovation in the use of leading edge technology for learning.
