He joined Intuitive Surgical as Manager of Mechanical Engineering in July 2003 when the company acquired Computer Motion, Inc. During his seven years at Computer Motion, he served as a mechanical engineer and engineering manager, developing the Zeus Robotic Surgical System.

After the acquisition of Computer Motion, Mr. Millman took on various positions at Intuitive Surgical developing multiple generations of the da Vinci Surgical System, including the da Vinci® Si Surgeon Console and the recently launched da Vinci® Xi™.

Mr. Millman received his B.S. in engineering science from Trinity University, and completed an M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at Northwestern University. He continued post-doctorate studies in tele-robotic systems and haptic displays at the Harvard Biorobotics Laboratory.

Event Details
Event Details:

Please Note- this is an evening B2DG Field Trip event to Intuitive Surgical at 1020 Kifer Road Sunnyvale, CA. In addition to the regular meeting and talk, Intuitive Surgical will have several of their da Vinci® surgical systems available to see and try both before and after the main technical program. Space is limited, so early registration is strongly suggested. There will be NO WALK-INS available for this event.

The event will start a little earlier than normal to allow more attendees access to the da Vinci® systems. So doors will open at 5:45pm, dinner will begin at 6pm but demonstration areas will be open until the technical program begins at 6:45pm. Upon completion of the technical meeting at approximately 8:15pm, those who did not get a chance to see the da Vinci® systems in the demonstration suites earlier may do so until closure of the meeting at 9pm.

We greatly appreciate the efforts of Aaron Joseph and Lauren Burch in arranging this opportunity for our B2DG members to have hands-on experiences with their cutting edge robotic surgery systems.

Developing the da Vinci Xi – A Case Study in User-Centered Design

Intuitive Surgical, Inc. is a robotics health care company that designs and manufactures the da Vinci® Surgical System. The company’s mission is to extend the benefits of minimally invasive surgery to those patients who can and should benefit from it.

At its essence, the da Vinci Surgical System applies tele-robotic technology to enhance human
performance—giving surgeons better vision, precision, and control. To date, surgeons have used the da Vinci Surgical System to perform minimally invasive surgery on more than two million patients worldwide.

In April 2014, 15 years after the first da Vinci system hit the market, the company launched a new platform, the da Vinci Xi Surgical System, to meet the unique needs of general and colorectal surgeons. The da Vinci Xi represents a major advance in clinical capabilities, as well as ease and efficiency of use. This talk will tell the story of the development of the da Vinci Xi, from conception to launch, with a focus on the fundamental engineering challenges that were overcome, and the methodologies of user-centered design and human factors engineering that were applied.
